Life Legacy

Sue Rowland, 77, of Slidell, LA, died on February 15, 2014 of Alzheimer’s disease. Preceded in death by her husband, Walter Harrison “Pete” Rowland, she is survivedby two daughters, Dr. Sherry Rowland and Diana Rowland; three grandchildren, Myra Duffour, Winston Duffour, and Anna Hoffstadt; and many step-grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren. Born in Nutley, NJ, she was a fan of science fiction, an avid reader, andwas active in Girl Scouts for decades. Following her own adage of “Make yourself more useful than ornamental,” she served as a regular volunteer with the Red Cross, wasa first aid and CPR instructor, and taught hundreds of children to swim in her backyard pool. She firmly believed one was never too old to learn, and in keeping with another adage of hers—“‘Can’t’ means ‘Won’t try’”—she returned to school in her fifties and earned anM.S in History from UNO, after which she entered the PhD program at Tulane. Though unable to complete her boards and dissertation due to unavoidable circumstances, she went on to become an adjunct professor at Dillard andXavier Universities, and later volunteered as an archivist at Newcomb. One of her great delights was when “Dear Abby” published her letter urging people to donate diaries and letters to historical archives instead of destroying them. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1998-12-08/features/9812080001_1_diary-dear-abby-libraries. Her favorite word was “Opsimath,” and in her memory her family wishes all who read this to remember one final Sue Rowland adage: “A word looked up is a word remembered.” Her family wishes to give deep and heartfelt thanks to the staff of the reminiscence unit at Live OakVillage Assisted Living as well as the staff of St. Josephs Hospice, and requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
