Charles Alfred Coogan III

Charles Alfred Coogan III, age 89, affectionately known as Al and Charlie, departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father on September 11, 2026. He was born February 23, 1937, in New Orleans, LA, to the late Charles Alfred Coogan, Jr. and Santa Mary Mortillaro Coogan.

He was the beloved husband of 55 years to Shirley Roseanne Hartle Coogan before her passing in 2016. He was the devoted father to Christopher Anthony Coogan (Kimberly), Patrick Michael Coogan (Mariefe), Charles Alfred Coogan IV (Mindy), Kelly Kathleen Coogan Jimenez (Robert). Brother to Carolyn C. Schof (David), Mary C. Schultz (Chris) and the late Thomas D. Coogan, Sr. (Peggy). He was the loving grandfather of Andrew Coogan, Brandon Coogan, Tabitha Rodriguez, Patrick Coogan II, Katie Coogan, Christina McDaniel Upshaw, Ashley McDaniel Ouber, Palo Jimenez, Sienna Jimenez, and Marco Jimenez. Great-grandfather of Gabriel Rodriguez, Aronne Rodriguez, Estephanie Rodriguez, Jasmine Rodriguez, Kyleigh Mae Rehage, Austin Sibley, Julian Upshaw, Kamrynn Ouber, and Karson Ouber. Great-great-grandfather of Edsel William Sibley.

Al graduated from Sacred Heart of Jesus School in 1951, Jesuit High School in 1955, and LSU in New Orleans, in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science. He joined the United States Navy and completed his training in 1959 during the peak of the Cold War and the Navy’s significant military buildup. He proudly served aboard the USS Des Moines, USS Galveston, and the USS Greenwood (DE 679). His final active assignment occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when his ship was on standby as part of the blockade effort. He completed his service on March 1, 1963 as a Fire Control Technician (Gunfire Radar Control) Striker Second Class FTG2.

He received the NASA Stennis Space Center Honoree Award for his significant contributions to the Nation’s space program, the highest form of recognition bestowed upon an employee. As part of that honor, he was invited to view the July 4, 2006, launch of the STS-121 Space Shuttle mission, the first and only Space Shuttle launch on Independence Day. The successful launch and landing led NASA to fully resume regular Space Shuttle launches in the construction of the International Space Station. This honor was one highlight of an aerospace career included work with Boeing on the Apollo program, followed by roles with Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin, and Jacobs Sverdrup.

Al will be remembered for his deep faith, devotion to family, quick wit, and gift for making others laugh. He loved sharing a good joke, coaching young athletes, fishing with dear friends, and taking pride in the accomplishments of his children, and grandchildren.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1050 Robert Blvd., Slidell, LA 70458, on September 30, 2026, beginning at 9:00 A.M. followed by the Funeral Mass following at 11:00 A.M.

Interment with Military Honors will be held at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 34770 Grantham College Dr., Slidell, LA 70460 at 12:30 P.M.
