Edgar Leroy Phillips, age 96, passed away peacefully at his home in Slidell, Louisiana on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, after living a full and faith-filled life.

Edgar was born on June 10, 1927, in Bogalusa, Louisiana, to Edgar and Louise Phillips. He was a graduate of Bogalusa High School. In 1945, at 17 he joined the US Navy and was part of the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII. In 1948 he enlisted in the US Air Force where he was a Staff Sergeant and Crew Chief on fighter jets, and served through the Korean War. He is remembered for his military service with a "Road to Victory Brick" at the WWII Museum.

Edgar met the love of his life Ruth Bass and in 1954.  They married at Grace Baptist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana, where they were members. In 1958 Edgar and Ruth moved to Chalmette where they raised five children. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Arabi and he was active in the Seamens Center ministry. He was employed at Kaiser Aluminum Chalmette and retired after 30 years. After retirement, he ran the Tiger Tag breaktag station for several years. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, the couple relocated to Slidell, Louisiana, and began attending Calvary Baptist Church.

Edgar's life was filled with service to God and Country, a love for his wife and family, and he was a role model and a blessing to us all. He enjoyed playing ball in the Kaiser and church leagues. He followed Tulane, LSU, and was a lifelong Saints fan, highlighted by their Super Bowl victory. He loved fishing, the outdoors, and camping with his family, as well as tending to his garden. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion.

Edgar was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth B. Phillips; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna and Hascal Bond, and Bernice and Ralph Oveal Pierce. He is survived by his five children, Ronald "Mark" Phillips (Caroline - deceased), Judy Phillips (Kurt), Alan Phillips, Susan P. Hickey (Kenneth - deceased), and David Phillips (Theresa); seven grandchildren, Lauren H. Tallo, Kristine Hickey, Kenneth Hickey, Jr., Daniel Hickey, Katelyne Hickey, Dawson Phillips, Gianna Phillips; four great-grandchildren, Malayna Hickey, Madison Dupriest, Cael Tallo, Beckham Tallo; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery (Honaker Funeral Home) 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell, Louisiana, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 10:00 am with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, Louisiana. Edgar supported this ministry for many years.
