LCDR Edward Kit Mullan USCG (Ret.), of Slidell, La. passed away July 17, 2022 at the age of 83.

Born to the late James Edward and Eva Dorothy Mullan on August 15, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland he was preceded in death by his loving wife Lorene Carole Mullan. Ed is survived by his children Elaine Brown, Michael Mullan, Brenda McBride (Carol Ann), Debbie Mullan (Angela) and Cheryl Wainright (Patrick). He is also survived by his sister Barbara Kramer, 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He served as an enlisted Storekeeper in the US Navy from 1955 until 1960 when he was selected to attend Officer Candidate School for the US Coast Guard. He was commissioned an Ensign in the Coast Guard in 1960 and his passion for the sea took him to duty stations from Miami, Florida to Long Beach, California and many states in between. After his commissioning, service on search and rescue cutters became a special way of life for many years. His assignments onboard USCGC Cartigan, USCGC Ariadne and as Commanding Officer onboard USCGC Steadfast were among his most cherished memories of life in the service. His Coast Guard duties afforded him the opportunity to serve on many fronts, the last of which was as the Public Affairs Officer for the 8th District Coast Guard Division, New Orleans. In 1979, after 24 years of military service, Ed retired in Slidell, LA where his family called home since 1973.  Except for a few short years in Milton, FL due to Hurricane Katrina, Ed lived the rest of his life in Slidell. He enjoyed amateur photography and even built a darkroom in his house where he became quite proficient at developing film. If he was not taking photos, he could usually be found tending to his garden with his beloved dachshunds by his side. Ed enjoyed riding motorcycles and restoring old cars; after retirement from the Coast Guard, he earned his certification as an ASE-certified mechanic. He worked at the Exxon garage on Old Spanish Trail for a number of years and though he would say it was "work", he enjoyed that he could be paid for indulging in a hobby.  He also held many offices within American Legion Post 374 in Slidell before he was elected as Commander - his proudest position. In his later years, he became an avid coin collector and often shared stories of his finds with friends and family during their visits.

A graveside service for relatives and friends will be held at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 10:00 am. A memorial celebration of his life will follow the interment at the family home. In the insightful and eternal words of Edward Kit Mullan..."It's time to shut it down!"
