Our beloved mother, Johanna Schaefer Abney, 77, gained her wings on Sunday, January 14, 2024 after a long battle with mesothelioma. She was born on Thursday, April 12,1945 and was a long time resident of Slidell, Louisiana. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Mayo and Cornelia Agnus Schaefer and her brother, Harry Schaefer.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Crosby Abney of 54 years, her two sons Keith (Christy) and Jason (Reagan), her grandchildren Lanie, Jesi, Noah, and Sophie, her brother Richard Schaefer, and her sister-in-law, Joy Schaefer.

Johanna was employed with St. Tammany Parish Schools for 29 years where she served as an assistant manager of food services at Slidell High School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and served in children ministries for many years.

She loved animals, plants and Elvis. She was a beautiful seamstress and shared that love with her granddaughters. Johanna dedicated her life to her sons and being a caretaker for her husband.  Everyone who met her, met a strong, independent woman who cared deeply for her family and friends.

Her services will take place at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd West, Slidell 70460, on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

Visitation will take place from 9:00am until 11:00am followed by the funeral service at 11:00am

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Slidell.

The repass will follow the burial at the home of Jason and Reagan Abney. Family and friends are invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Slidell Animal Shelter.
