Slidell
Joseph Forbes, SgtMaj (retired), 80, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Slidell Louisiana.
Joe Forbes was born on June 21, 1945, in Cuba, Missouri, to George and Gertie (Cooksey) Forbes. A graduate of the Cuba High School class of 1963, he answered the call to service in 1967 by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, embarking on what would become a distinguished 30-year military career.
Characterized by an unwavering dedication to duty, a sharp wit, and fierce loyalty, Joe commanded deep respect and led with unwavering integrity. He began his career in aviation support equipment maintenance before transitioning to a Drill Instructor in Parris Island, South Carolina, where he shaped future Marines. Through merit and leadership, he steadily advanced through the ranks, ultimately serving as Sergeant Major for an A-6 squadron, a Marine Aircraft Group, and concluding his career as the Sergeant Major for the Marine Corps Reserve.
His three decades of faithful service included deployments around the globe, notably encompassing tours in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Shield/Storm. While he earned numerous decorations and honors, he considered his proudest achievement to be the mentorship and development of the next generation of military leaders.
Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Joe settled in Slidell, where he enjoyed a successful second career with Endeavor Enterprises until his subsequent retirement in 2017.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Kay Forbes, and his brother, George Tom Forbes. His legacy lives on through his beautifully blended family. He is survived by his loving companion of twenty-five years, Donna Sison; his children, Keith (Dailene) Forbes, Craig Forbes, and Scott (Morgan) Forbes; and Shelley (Kevin) Luscy and Keith (Gretchen) Sison. He was the proud grandfather of Kaitlynne, Alyssa (Kenny), Peyton, Cassidy, Jackson, Katherine, Lucy, Dane, and Jordan; and great-grandfather of Noah, Lynnde, and Parker, whose arrival is eagerly anticipated.
