Kennett Whitehead Huitt, of Harahan, LA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2023.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Madelaine Hooge Huitt, four children, Darren Huitt (Jacqueline), Jannine Huitt, Cheryl Rivera (Warren) and Kathleen Duhé (Daniel). Also survived by four grandchildren, Patrick, Kennett II, Darren Jr., and Michael.

Kennett was preceded in death by his parents Harold Whitehead Huitt and Mildred LeBaron Huitt, as well as his brother Alfred Huitt.

He proudly served our country in the United States Army and after being honorably discharged in 1962 became a carpenter by trade. He built the house where he provided for and raised his family in River Ridge, Louisiana. He spent much of his career as Superintendent on many construction sites, including the Louisiana Pavilion at the 1984 World's Fair.

Kennett was an avid fisherman and hunter since childhood. He instilled his love of fishing in his wife and children. Even into his 80s, Kennett continued actively fishing the waterways off Lake Pontchartrain in Slidell. He could always be heard saying his catchphrase, "Set the hook." He would often pass the time walking around in the rain and pulling up weeds he saw along the way.

Kennett was a jack-of-all-trades. He could build almost anything in his workshop. He spent years of his life tinkering, planning, engineering, piecing, building, cutting, connecting, and even welding. His workshop was his happy place, but his garden was his pride and joy. Kennett's garden spanned vegetables and fruits, everything from carrots to zucchini to watermelon. He kept family and friends well-supplied with tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Kennett also enjoyed reading, especially stories pertaining to U.S. History. Hundreds of his books have been donated to the Friends of Jefferson Parish Library.

Kennett's sense of humor was dry and infectious. He had an endless supply of dad jokes to suit any occasion. He was a fierce protector of his family and a loyal and faithful friend. His love language was "doing", and he did everything he could for everyone he cared about, as well as anyone else he encountered that was in need.

Kennett was a loving husband and a caring, giving father. We are blessed to have known him and to have been loved by such a beautiful soul.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity of your choice. Two of Kennett's favorite charities are Wounded Warrior Project and the American Alzheimer's Association.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Services at HONAKER FUNERAL HOME,1751 GAUSE Blvd. WEST (IN FOREST LAWN CEMETERY), Slidell, LA on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 11:00 A.M.

Interment with military honors will follow in FOREST LAWN CEMETERY.

Visitation on Monday after 9:00 A.M. until funeral time.
