It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Francis Newby Sr, a resident of Slidell, Louisiana, who passed away peacefully at the age of 79, while surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, July 20, 2026, in Slidell.

Larry was born on September 6, 1946, at Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Ada Lancashire Newby and Arthur L Newby Sr. Larry lived a life defined by hard work, dedication and an unwavering love for his family. He proudly served as a Merchant Mariner and honorably served six years in the Louisiana National Guard. He worked for 33 years as a Longshoreman Union Local 3000 at the Port of New Orleans, where he earned the respect of his coworkers through his strong work ethic and commitment.

Outside of work, Larry loved spending time on his shrimp boat. He also had a lifelong passion for hunting and treasured the time spent outdoors.  It was where he was happiest.

Above all else, Larry's greatest love was his family and friends. He had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, never expecting anything in return. His kindness, loyalty, and willingness to help will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mildred Donnis Newby, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. He is also survived by his three children, Larry Newby Jr. (Kelly), Lori Taylor (Jason) and Tammy Newby.

Larry was blessed with seven grandchildren, including Larry III (Rachel), Steven (Renae), Nicholas (Eden), Jordan (Taylor), Morgan (Adi), Sara and Juan.

He was also a proud great- grandfather to Grayson, Kohen, Wesley, Charlie, Baswara, with another great grandchild Violet lovingly expected soon.

Larry is survived by his siblings, Arthur Newby Jr. (Barbara) and Janice Stokey (Andrew) and was preceded in his death by his beloved sister, Lynn Dugas. He was also blessed with a large extended family with many loving brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law who shared in the joys and memories throughout his life. He was also cherished by his mother-in-law (Elizabeth Brown), who held a special place in her heart for him and loved him dearly.

Larry leaves behind family and friends who will forever cherish his love, guidance and countless memories. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of hard work and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
