Lloyd George Westphal, 92, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 in Slidell, He was born on July 2, 1930, in Barnard, South Dakota, one of three children raised in hard-working mid-western farming family.  His early years were spent working the farm with his family, playing high school basketball and hunting ducks and pheasants if and when he had some free time.  Working the farm provided a wholesome early life while also instilling a strong work ethic and a "can do" attitude that was beneficial throughout his life.

Lloyd's farm life ended when a military draft notice arrived one day and he chose to join the Air Force and served his country as an aviator where he flew transport aircraft in the Korean War and then finished his military career flying for the presidential fleet (Special Air Missions) stationed in Andrews Air Force Base (now Joint Base Andrews).  Early in his military career he met the love of his life, Beatrice "Bea" Larson Westphal, and they were happily married for 65 years before her passing in 2018.  After retiring from the Air Force after 22 adventurous years that took him on exciting tours of duty, including Japan and Germany, Lloyd entered his second 20+ year career as a corporate pilot flying out of Lakefront Airport in New Orleans.

Lloyd's favorite pastimes/hobbies over the years included RV adventures with Bea, vacationing at their condominiums in Orange Beach, AL, playing golf at Pinewood Country Club and talking aviation and politics with his sons.  He "shot his age" in golf all the way into his 90's!  He also enjoyed attending church services on Sunday mornings, followed by brunch at local restaurants.  Lloyd was a good, honest man; very friendly and family-oriented with a great sense of humor who always enjoyed conversing on many topics, especially his fascinating adventures during his flying career.  Lloyd "never met a stranger" and loved to strike up spontaneous conversations with anyone he met.  He will be dearly missed.

Mr. Westphal was preceded in death by his Parents: George and Eva Westphal; and his sister: Edna Middleton.

He is survived by his two sons: Gary and Dana Westphal (Gina); two grandchildren: Lance (Elizabeth) and Lauren Westphal; and two great grandchildren: Bennett and Walker Westphal, and one sister: Luella Burton.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd West, in Slidell.

Burial will be at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell.

Visitation will begin at 9:00am, followed by funeral services at 11:00am.
