Martin Alan Thieme, 77, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at his residence, surrounded by family.

Martin was born November 1, 1944 to Rev. Otto G. Thieme and Mrs. Margaret Eggert Thieme in Chicago, IL.  Along with his brother, Otto Charles Thieme, and sister, Susan Thieme Fanzone, he grew up as a member of Timothy Lutheran Church on the southside of Chicago where he was both baptized and confirmed and attended grade school.  Martin graduated from Luther High School South in 1962.

After studying Mining Engineering at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Martin obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering in 1966.  He went on to work for Shell Oil for two summers and obtain his Master of Science in 1968 from the University of Missouri at Rolla (name change from MSM).  In 1968, Martin started a long engineering career with Shell Oil Company in Midland, TX.

On October 3, 1970 Martin married Donna Phillips, whom he met at Shell Oil, at Grace Lutheran Church in Midland, TX.  God blessed them with 4 children:  Jared, Tara, Aaron, and Ashleigh.  Martin was later blessed with grandson, Mason Putman (Ashleigh and Sonny Putman) and step-grandsons, Trey and Brennan Higgins (Jared and Tiffany Thieme).  Donna and Martin were married 25 years when God called Donna home on June 5, 1995.  Martin shared his passion for rocks, minerals, and gemstones as well as gardening with his family and anyone else who would listen.  Many family vacations were spent exploring areas off the beaten path throughout the United States.

During his years at Shell Oil, Martin held several technical and managerial positions including a two-year assignment at Shell's Bel Air Research Center in Houston.  In 1977 Martin transferred to the New Orleans office where he continued to advance in his field.  Martin first retired from Shell in 1992 to work as a consultant at Collarini Engineering Inc.  In 2001 Shell Oil asked Martin to return to Shell as a contract employee.  Martin enjoyed his work immensely until his retirement in 2010.  During retirement Martin continued to apply his engineering skills in all manners of life, spent time in fellowship with friends, drove his boat through various waterways in search of a good fishing spot, petered around in his garden, and walked his dog, Champ.  Most of all Martin enjoyed spending time with his family and chatting with them on the phone or on Facetime when they could not be near.

Throughout his life Martin was an active member of each LCMS church he attended.  He served in a number of different positions including the Board of Elders at Grace Lutheran, Midland, TX; Resurrection Lutheran, Spring, TX; Bethany Lutheran Church, Slidell, LA; Lamb of God Lutheran Church, Slidell, LA (founding member); and Redeemer Lutheran, Mandeville, LA.  Additionally, he served on the LCMS Southern District's Board of Trustees for several years.

Martin was proceeded in death by his wife Donna Phillips Thieme; parents, Rev. Otto G. and Margaret Thieme; brother Otto Charles Thieme.  Martin was survived by his sister Susan (David) Franzone; brother-in-law Jerry (Christy) Phillips;  children Jared (Tiffany) Thieme, Tara Thieme, Aaron Thieme, and Ashleigh (Sonny) Putman; grandson Mason Putman; and step-grandsons Trey and Brennan Higgins.

In lieu of flowers it was Martin's wish that you would consider contributing to one of the following: Redeemer Lutheran Church of Mandeville, Compassus Hospice, or your favorite charity.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 22531 Hwy. 1088, Mandeville, LA. 70448 on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 1:00 P.M.

Interment in FOREST LAWN CEMETERY.

Visitation on Saturday at the church after 11:00 A.M. until funeral time.
