Obituary

Melva J. Wallace Mitchell, 84, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson Louisiana.

Melva was born June 24, 1938 in Frankston, Texas to Alvie Willis Fisher and Mary Corean Evans Fisher. She was proceeded in death by her first husband, John Perry Wallace; her second husband, William Doc "Mitch" Mitchell; two brothers, James Fisher and William Fisher; a grandchild, Jennifer Rebecca Wallace.

Melva is survived by three children; Pamela Kopfler (Joe Kopfler), John Patrick Wallace (Naydeen Berrigan), Sandra Planetta (Paul Planetta); four grandchildren, Adam Cole McConathy (Theresa McConathy), Caroline Schneider (Davis Schneider), Jason Patrick Wallace, Anthony Planetta (Madeline Planetta); six great-grandchildren, Cole McConathy, Carson McConathy, Colin McConathy, Ford Schneider, Kaitlyn, and Jacob.

Adventure started early for this small town Texas girl. She married her first love in 1955 and traveled far from home as part of a doodlebug crew. From Texas to Wyoming and from Mississippi to West Virginia, they lived in or passed through every state in the lower forty-eight states until they settled in Slidell in 1969. She shouldered all the child rearing and took pride in her home. As the children grew up she became an avid collector of antique china, glassware, and figurines. She loved reading novels and chatting on the phone with friends and her children. All who knew her well will miss her big laugh and perfect pitch whistle. In 1987, the laughter and whistling stopped for a while after her first husband died, but love found her again and she enjoyed twenty-six years with her second husband. They found adventure in RV travel, Sunday drives, and great food along the way.

She maintained good health in her final years and continued to read and collect and found pleasure in visits with her children and friends. She will be missed.
