Obituary

Norman Arthur Steger, 90, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away at home surrounded by family on Friday, December 27, 2024, in Slidell. Norman was born June 27, 1934, in Overland, Missouri, to Elmer and Lillie Dell Steger.

He lived his early years in Overland, Missouri and went to Ritenour High where he met his future wife, Carol Fay Rickard.  After High School he went to Engineering School at Washington University in St. Louis and in his senior year married Carol Fay Rickard on June 4, 1955.  After graduation from college, Norman accepted a job at North American Aviation in Ventura Co., CA.  He and his wife bought a 1951 Chevrolet from Norman's sister and traveled Route 66 to California.  In June 1957 the Army called and they were off to Fort Bliss, TX, with his wife pregnant with their first daughter, Dana, where she was born.  After the Army, the family moved to Thousand Oaks, CA where Norman worked at North American/Rockwell as a rocket engine test engineer. Their second daughter, Susan Fay, was born there in 1960.  In 1977 Rockwell International transferred Norman to the Hanford Nuclear Facility located in Richland, WA.  In 1987 the family moved to Slidell when Rockwell International transferred Norman to Stennis Space Center in MS to work on the Space Shuttle Program.

After retiring from Rockwell, he devoted the next 20 plus years working for STARC as a Dedicated Support Provider and was Coach Norm for bowling and bocce ball Special Olympics.  He devoted many hours to the many STARC clients that he loved and that loved him.  He was a natural Support Provider and enjoyed it.

When first moving to Slidell in 1987, his wife and he became members of Aldersgate Methodist Church and made good and lasting friendships.  Norm remained an avid church and Sunday School goer until his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Steger; brother, Richard Steger; and a sister, Doris Rickard.

He is survived by two children, Dana DeMond (Troy), Susan Harvey; four grandchildren, Matt McBride, Ashley Moore (Ben), Jake Zenisek, Jennifer Harvey; one great-grandchild, Wyatt Moore; a brother, Gary Steger; step granddaughter, Emily (Mike) and great-grandchild, Ellie, Many loved nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church 360 Robert Blvd. Slidell, LA  70458.

The visitation will begin at 10:30 am followed by the Celebration of Life at 11:00am.
