Richard Allen Swartz Sr., of Slidell, LA passed away peacefully at the Hospice House on August 14, 2022 at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Janice Swartz; his sons, Richard Swartz, Jr. (Charmaine), Steve Swartz (Dianna) and his daughters, Beverly Swartz Frey (Patrick), Sandra "Sandy" Swartz and two step sons, Alan Risher (Anita) and Mark Risher (Amanda). He was blessed with ten grandchildren and four step grandchildren. He also has fifteen great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Swartz, wife Thelma Swartz, and his grandson Richard Allen Swartz III and step granddaughter, Taylor Risher.

Richard was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 11, 1929. Soon thereafter the family moved to Covington, VA where he enjoyed his childhood years with his five siblings in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He became a stellar multiple sport athlete and eventually earned a football scholarship to the College of William & Mary.  He served in the U.S Navy on an aircraft carrier during the Korean War.  Upon his discharge, he returned to William & Mary and eventually Covington where he met his first loving wife, Thelma, with whom he had his four children. They were married in 1953 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

In Cleveland, Richard "Dick" Swartz went to work for a clothing manufacturer Joseph and Feiss where he remained for the next sixteen years.  He was an avid Browns and Indians fan attending the last Championship for the Browns in 1964.  In 1970, he was given an offer to be the Operations Manager for Haspel Brothers in New Orleans.  He jumped at the opportunity to bring his family to the South.

Once in New Orleans, the family moved to Slidell in 1972 where he lived for the rest of his earthly life.  Hurricane Katrina caused a four-year hiatus in North Carolina.

After the untimely death of his beloved Thelma in 1982, he was blessed to marry a wonderful and beautiful woman, Janice, in 1986.  During the next 36 years of his life, they enjoyed music, dancing and attending many social events.  They worked together as entrepreneurs, attended Grace Memorial Baptist Church regularly and supported charitable causes.  Richard and Janice were a perfect match for each other.  As we all know, physical life on this earth ends, but the family knows his spiritual existence will continue and be known to them.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at HONAKER FUNERAL HOME,

1751 GAUSE Blvd. WEST (IN FOREST LAWN CEMETERY), Slidell, LA
on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 2:00 P.M.

Interment will follow in FOREST LAWN CEMETERY.

Visitation on Saturday after 12:00 P.M. until funeral time.
