Robert "Bob" Luther Gallagher, Jr. passed away at his daughter's home, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, in Madisonville, LA. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the age of 76.
Born October 25, 1947, in Chester, PA. to Robert and Isabelle Gallagher, Bob was a longtime resident of Slidell, LA. before moving to Madisonville, LA. He married Carmen Nilza Rodriguez on July 26, 1969 at St. Anthony's Church in Chester, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Isabelle Gallagher and his sister Janice Gallagher Downs.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carmen Nilza Rodriguez Gallagher; a sister, Sharon Mary Gallagher McClaskey; a son, Brian Joseph Gallagher (Lauren); a daughter, Lara Elizabeth Gallagher Galloway (Justin); and eight grandchildren, Wyatt Cooper Galloway, Lilian Grace Schexnaydre, Ella Caroline Gallagher, Charlotte Claire Galloway, Lilly Caitlin Gallagher, Emma Jane Galloway, Laine Morgan Galloway, and Tucker Robert Gallagher.
Bob served in the United States Navy as a Machinist Mate on the Destroyers USS Vesole and Kraus during the Vietnam War, and participated in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
An award-winning engineer and holder of numerous patents, Bob retired from Lockheed Martin after 27 years of service, having worked on the space shuttle, space station, experimental rockets and tooling, and many other advanced projects.
Bob was a self-taught sailor who owned many boats, sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and Lake Pontchartrain from his home in Eden Isles. His dream to sail in the British Virgin Islands with his son, Brian, was finally realized in May 2008. They returned twice more, in 2009 and 2013, visiting Cane Garden Bay, Norman Island and Jost Van Dyke, amongst other islands.
Bob leaves behind many friends and family who loved and will miss him dearly. He was a devoted Poppop, never missing any of his grandchildrens' games or activities.
