Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Richard Ruszkowski, 80, of Slidell, LA, on January 8, 2025. Robert was born in Chicago, IL, the second son of Stanley and Sophie Ruszkowski, and grew up alongside his brothers, Edward and Richard.

Robert was married to the love of his life, Jayme Ruszkowski, for over 18 years, a relationship that brought him daily happiness and joy. Together, they shared a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Robert was also a devoted father to his children, Katherine (Sarisen) and her husband, Vinny, Christopher, and his wife, Orlanys, as well as his stepdaughter, Kelley Chauvin. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew and his wife, LeAnna, Michael, Stephanie, Colin, and Ethan. Loving brother to Richard and Mary-Ann Ruszkowski. All of whom brought him great pride and joy.

Robert's family, friends, and community will remember him as a loving, kind-hearted man who adored life and the people in it. He was known for his warm smile, love of golf, and his enduring commitment to spending time with those he held dear. Even as his health declined, Robert found solace in his golf clubs, always determined to enjoy the game, even if he could no longer walk the full 18 holes.

A graduate of DePaul University in Chicago, Robert majored in accounting and minored in math.  In June 1969, Robert was commissioned into the United States Army Military Intelligence Corps after attending the Officer Candidate School at Ft. Belvoir, VA. Throughout his military career, Robert served in many key positions, including tours in Vietnam, Thailand, Okinawa, and Korea. He served in military intelligence and finance, earning numerous awards, including the Bronze Star (with oak leaf cluster) and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Robert served as the Finance Company Commander for the 101st Airborne Division, the Operations Officer for Okinawa Garrison Operations, and as the Acting Inspector General for all Army units in Okinawa. His later service included his role as the Fiscal Officer for the 501st Military Intelligence Unit in Korea.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Sophie Ruszkowski, and his brother, Edward Ruszkowski. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends who will miss him greatly.

A celebration of Robert's life will be held Honaker Funeral Home in Slidell. LA, January 13, 2025 with visitation from 11AM to 1PM and service at 1PM.

Robert's love of life, family, and country will never be forgotten. He lived with purpose, integrity, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved. He will be greatly missed.
