Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth Smith West, 94, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on Wednesday, the thirty-first of January 2024.  Sarah is survived by a son, Roger Gregg West (Joelyn) of Montgomery, Texas. She is also survived by two daughters, Paula Zdziarski-West (Jackie) of Oak Park, Illinois, and Amy Anderson (Bruce) of Mandeville, Louisiana. She is survived by a sister, Patricia Lynch (Patrick) of Encampment, Wyoming.  Sarah was the beloved grandmother of seven grandchildren: Amber Ivanova (Ilya) of Denver, Colorado; Karlin Kosem (Adam) of Wilmington, North Carolina; Kyle Anderson of League City, Texas; Luna Zdziarski-West of Oak Park, Illinois; Casey Anderson (Nunu) of Austin, Arkansas; Camryn Zdziarski-West of Oak Park, Illinois; and Rowan Zdziarski-West of Oak Park, Illinois.

Sarah was born in Richmond, Kansas on the twenty-sixth of June 1929.  She was the daughter of Sharon Whitnah and Esther Ruth Smith.  Sarah graduated from high school in Great Bend, Kansas in 1947. She lived and worked in Great Bend until she married Alvin West on the twenty-fifth of May 1952. They were married for sixty-five years until Alvin's death in January of 2018.

Sarah was a resident of Slidell for over fifty-three years.  She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school, working the annual Pumpkin Patch, and helping with the youth group and office duties. She held numerous leadership positions within the PTA in each of her children's schools and remained active with PTA throughout their school years. She actively supported her children's sports, musical and scouting activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin West; her parents, Sharon and Ruth Smith; and her siblings: Juanita Rose (James), Franklin Smith (Eleanor), Maude Smith, Iona Velasco (Nestor), and Phyllis Waters (Jack).

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church Slidell, 400 Erlanger Ave, Slidell, on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Visitation will begin at 10:00am followed by the memorial service at 11:00am.

Burial will be in Southeast Lousiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First United Methodist in Slidell.
