Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Virginia Landry Vitale on July 30, 2024, at the age of 41. She was surrounded by her family and friends. A resident of Slidell, Virginia was the beloved wife of Joe Vitale Jr. For the past seven months, Virginia bravely battled leukemia. Her courage and optimism always on display, Virginia was cared for during this difficult time by Joe Joe, as well as her loving parents Darrell and Sheri Landry, and her devoted brother Darrell "Bubba" Landry.

An exceptional and caring registered nurse, Virginia was dedicated to her patients and colleagues. She was known for her beautiful soul and spirit, touching the lives of everyone who encountered her. Virginia's smiling face and immense degree of kindness made those around her feel seen and valued. Virginia loved traveling, fashion, and makeup. She was the oldest cousin, first grandchild and centerpiece of her family. Virginia enjoyed baking and decorating beautiful cakes, a skill she learned from and tradition she continued in honor of her treasured grandmother and namesake, Virginia Wortmann.

Virginia had a special place in her heart for her pets: pups Chloe, Zoe, and Rudy, and her cats Charlie, Lucy, and Callie. She cherished her role as "Nanny Virg" to her godchildren, whom she adored. She is well known to them for always spreading joy and always ready to spoil them with gifts and love. She shared a very close bond with her PACU friends. Virginia just loved spending time with her family and friends, always putting them first in her life.

Virginia was preceded in death by her grandmother Virginia "Ginger" Wortmann and her grandparents Jessie "Herbert" and Jenny Landry as well as her "Nan" Holly Wortmann.

Virginia is also survived by her grandfather, Arthur "Mickey" Wortmann as well as her in-laws Joe and Aline Vitale, her brother-in-law Jonathan (Hilary) Vitale, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Slidell Memorial ICU & ED, EJGH/Tulane ICU, UMC, and EJGH Cancer Center for their exceptional care and support. Her family also wishes to acknowledge the support of the UMC PACU staff, RPM Pizza Domino's Pizza and Manie Garcia State Farm Agency for their unwavering support.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on August 6, 2024, from 10:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 910 Cross Gates Blvd. in Slidell. A Catholic Funeral Mass will begin at 12:30 PM.

Please consider donating to the AML/Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the ASPCA in her memory. Also, there are severe shortages of platelets and blood in our state. Please consider becoming donors. This was something Virginia was really encouraging especially after her diagnosis. Her beautiful spirit will forever live on in our hearts.
